Netters Finish Third at NCAC Tourney

A three-set match for the deciding point eventually gave Wabash a 5-4 win over Allegheny College Sunday evening, giving the Little Giants third place at the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament. 

Tied at 4-4, the deciding point came in the fifth singles flight when Ian Leonard went three sets to defeat the Gators' Jonathan Jordan 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2. The victory came nearly five hours after the match between the two schools had started.

Wabash picked up three victories in doubles play. Elliot Dewey and Evan Bayless scored an 8-4 win in the first flight. Peter Gunderman and Ricky Ritter took an 8-6 victory at number two doubles. Leonard and Lewis Towne gave Wabash its third team point with an 8-4 win at number three doubles. Towne would score the only other singles point for Wabash with a straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 win at number six singles.

The Little Giants reached the consolation finals of the tournament by opening with a 5-1 win over the College of Wooster. Gunderman was a 6-1, 7-5 winner at number two singles against the Scots, while Leonard (6-4, 6-2) and Towne (6-4, 6-0) also scored singles victories. Ritter and Gunderman grabbed an 8-4 win at number two doubles, while Leonard and Towne cruised to an 8-0 win in the third doubles flight. Wabash followed its win over Wooster with a 5-0 loss to ninth-ranked Kenyon College.

Wabash finishes the 2010 season with a record of 17-11, setting a new school record for victories in a season. The Little Giants have also posted back-to-back third place finishes in the NCAC Tourney.
