Primary Webmail Program to Change July 26

On Monday, July 26, we will begin phasing out the old Webmail program, and switching all webmail traffic to the new Webmail program (Outlook Web App).  Please read on for important information about this change.

What This Change Means
On Monday morning, July 26, we will redirect the name 'webmail.wabash.edu' to point to the new webmail program.  If you click on "Webmail" on the Wabash home page, or use the webmail login form on the Faculty/Staff or Current Students pages, you will go to the new Webmail program.  Saved bookmarks may also redirect to the new Webmail program.

The old Webmail program will be accessible for six weeks, at http://oldwebmail.wabash.edu.

Will I Lose My Email?
The new Webmail and old Webmail both point to your same mail folders, so you will see all of your email messages in both versions.  If things look different, note the following:

  • You can selectively subscribe to individual mail folders in the old Webmail, so you may see folders in the new Webmail that were hidden in the old Webmail.
  • The sort order for a folder in the new Webmail may be different than what you had set in the old Webmail.  To change the sort order in the new Webmail, adjust the "Arrange By" settings just above your list of messages.
  • The new Webmail stores sent messages in a folder called "Sent Items".  Messages you sent using the old Webmail will still appear in the folder called "Sent".
  • The new Webmail stores deleted messages in a folder called "Deleted Items" rather than the "Trash" folder.

Webmail Address Books
Address books cannot be migrated from the old Webmail to the new Webmail.  If you have a large address book in the old Webmail program and would like a printable copy to help with this transition, please contact the Help Desk and they can send you a copy.

My Webmail Bookmark Doesn't Work
With the change to server names, it's likely that any bookmarks you have for the old Webmail site will not longer work (you probably will get an error "404 - File or directory not found").  You will need to create a new bookmark for Webmail.

End of Service Date for Old Webmail
We will shut off the old Webmail program on Wednesday, September 15.  Until then, you can access the old webmail at http://oldwebmail.wabash.edu.

There will also be a link to the old Webmail program on the login page of the new Webmail program.

Outlook Web App 2010 Features
Highlights of the new version of Webmail include:

  • Multiple browser support: the system is the same for all web browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari, on both Windows and MacOS.
  • Single pane of messages: no matter how many message you have in a folder, they will all appear on the same scrollable page, so you can find any message without paging your mailbox.
  • Conversation view: by default, messages in a single conversation thread are grouped together, and can be read, moved, or deleted as a whole.
  • Message searching and filtering capabilities are greatly enhanced.
  • And one change some might find irritating: if you turn on the message preview pane, it can only go to the right of your message list; it is no longer possible to have a mail preview pane below your messages.
  • You can set email forwarding to another address, without assistance from IT Services.
  • Click here to see a screen capture of the main view.

Outlook Web App Tips and Tricks
We hope you find find Outlook Web App to be intuitive and easy to use.  Here are a few tricks to help you make the most of the program.

  • When sending a message to multiple address, you must separate the addresses with a semicolon (;), not a comma.
  • You can file messages by dragging them from the inbox to another folder.
  • If you use Outlook or Entourage in your office as your main mail client, your calendar and contacts will automatically sync with the new Webmail, as will any mail filtering rules.
  • By default, Outlook Web App uses a "conversation mode" to group message threads.  This helps you quickly find related messages (even if they are in different folders).  If you'd like to turn off conversation mode, you can do so by clicking the down arrow next to "Arrange by:" (above your message list) and clearing the check mark next to "Conversation".
  • If you have questions or problems using the new Webmail, contact the Help Desk (helpdesk@wabash.edu, 765-361-6400) for assistance.
