The Angeles Saxophone Quartet will perform a concert tonight in the Salter Concert Hall of the Fine Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public, and begins at 8:00 p.m
Founded in the fall of 2008 at UCLA, members include Christopher Elchico (soprano saxophone), Ryan Weston (alto saxophone), Umut Dursun (tenor saxophone) and Andrew Barnhart (baritone saxophone). All are undergraduate and graduate students of Dr. Doug Masek at UCLA.
The Angeles Saxophone Quartet recently won the Senior Wind Division Gold Medal at the 2010 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. The quartet was also a finalist in the 2010 North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet Competition and the 2009 Coleman Chamber Music Competition. In addition, the quartet has performed at the U.S. Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Fairfax, Virginia, as part of their collegiate quartet recital series.
Closer to home, the Angeles Saxophone Quartet participates in the Gluck Outreach Program at UCLA, performing and educating the public about classical saxophone. Programs take place in schools, libraries, convalescent homes, and other public venues across the greater Los Angeles area.
The Angeles Saxophone Quartet is appearing on this series as part of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition’s Midwest Winner’s Tour. As Gold Medal Winner of the Fischoff, the Angeles Saxophone Quartet was selected from a field of twenty-four of the nation’s finest young chamber music ensembles. The Fischoff Competition is the largest chamber music competition in the world. It was founded in 1973 in South Bend, Indiana, and is held annually at the University of Notre Dame.
