Fites spent more than 42 years with the Caterpillar Corporation, including a decade as its chairman and chief executive officer. In 1995, he was named CEO of the Year by Financial World magazine, and he serves on the board of directors of Exxon Mobil, Georgia-Pacific, AT&T Wireless, Wolverine World Wide, and AK Steel. He also serves as chairman of the national advisory board of the Salvation Army.
