A first place finish at the Fred Wilt Invitational and two automatic national qualifying times have helped lift the Wabash track and field team into the top-25 of the latest U.S. Track and Field at Cross Country Coaches Association Division III men's national computer rankings. The Little Giants moved into 19th place in the latest list of team.
Wabash jumped all the way from 69th in last week's computer list by scoring a total of 34.02 points. The Little Giants trail another North Coast Athletic Conference school, Allegheny College, on the list. The Gators rank 18th with a total of 35.02 points. Ohio Wesleyan dropped out of the top-25 rankings after placing 23rd last week.
The USTFCCCA uses mathematical formulae based on current national descending order lists to compile a team’s ranking. The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national-title race.
The Little Giants finished first of out 13 teams at the Fred Wilt Invitational Saturday, hosted by Anderson University. Wabash athletes Jake Waterman and Kevin McCarthy each posted NCAA national qualifying times in the 800-meter run. Waterman's time of 1:50.87 set a new Wabash record and is the second-fastest time reported by a Division III male this season. Waterman earned NCAC Men's Distance/Middle Distance Runner of the Week honors for his efforts. McCarthy finished second at the Anderson meet with a time of 1:52.03, the fifth-quickest time reported this year.
Wabash will compete at the 2011 NCAC Indoor Track and Field Championship meet on Friday and Saturday at Oberlin College in Ohio.
