Catch the Wabash Homecoming Spirit

The falling leaves and crisp autumn mornings suggest to me only one thing—Homecoming at Wabash College is just around the corner.

This Friday and Saturday, Wabash will roll out the scarlet carpet for its alumni, parents, and friends in the annual renewal of what seems like an ancient tradition. Homecoming at Wabash, the brainchild of Jasper Cragwall many decades ago, includes reunions, fine arts, athletics, and this year, the dedication of a new building.

The College is also pleased have as a part of its Homecoming activities the Art League's downtown juried art exhibition, "A New Beginning."

This will be a weekend jam-packed with activities, from the debut of Dwight Watson's original play, The Newton Project, to a reunion of Wabash Sphinx Club members. In between will be all the traditional rites of the fall—Chapel Sing on Thursday morning; reunions on Friday night; plus Alumni Chapel, the Homecoming football game and soccer match, the "queen" contest, and the Glee Club's Homecoming Concert all on Saturday.

If you haven't been to campus this fall, please join us for any part of the weekend. Professor Watson's play, which runs Wednesday through Saturday night, includes a number of local actors and actresses, and there is no charge for admission. The Glee Club performs on Saturday night and will carry into its concert the full spirit of the weekend.

At Chapel on Saturday morning, the National Association of Wabash Men will honor alumni for service—to their communities, their professions, and to Wabash. In addition, two loyal members of this community will be named honorary alumni: Librarian Larry Frye and long-time admissions counselor Mike Reidy.

Following Chapel, we'll dedicate Byron K. Trippet Hall, the stunning building that sits on the north edge of Wabash Avenue. The building will be open for tours through the morning, and at 11:30 we'll formally dedicate the structure in honor of the late dean and president, Byron Trippet '30. We're also anxious to welcome home Dick Ristine '41, who will give his recollections of President Trippet as part of the ceremony. We're most pleased that at least 12 members of the Trippet family will be on hand as we cut the ribbon.

I hope you'll join us for that very special ceremony, and take a look at the new home of our admissions and financial aid offices, as well as the Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts. Be advised, though, that Wabash Avenue will be closed to thru traffic for about 90 minutes on Saturday morning since the ceremony will be conducted on the front steps of Trippet Hall and onto Wabash Avenue.

The football team hosts mighty Allegheny College in North Coast Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon, while the soccer team hosts Oberlin College. Both outcomes will go a long way in determining the Little Giants' position in the final conference standings.

Indeed, it's Homecoming week at Wabash College. Please consult our web site for a complete listing of the activities, and plan to join with us as we capture the spirit of the fall.
