Students Give of Their Time, Talent on Community Service Day

Student Senate VP Kip Chase helped organize Community Service Day
A warm Saturday in the fall. College football and the Ryder Cup on TV. The Little Giant football team playing at Kenyon. The soccer and rugby teams in action.

It might have been a great day to lay around the fraternity house, watch TV, or check out the Ruggers in their win over Ball State.

Instead, 219 Wabash students chose to give their open Saturday to take part in the Student Senate's Second Annual Community Service Day. Every Wabash living unit was represented in what Senate leaders called "a huge success for both Wabash and the Crawfordsville Community."

The event was organized by Senate VP Kip Chase and President Brian Lawlor. A total of 14 organizations were served by the Wabash students who participated.

All Wabash freshmen are required to work an afternoon of community service on their first weekday on campus. Beyond that, it has been groups of students who have seen opportunities to serve and responded.

"A huge thank you goes out to the students who spent their Saturday morning working for the community and all those who supported the event," said Lawlor and Chase in a note to students.

The event follows through on the Senate's goal to complete two such service days in the local community each year. The last event drew more than 110 students last spring.

This effort piggy-backs on the football team's "Turnover Hunger" program, which is a combination of fund- and food-raising for the local FISH Food Pantry. In its first week', the team hauled in nearly 2,000 non-perishable food items. Every member of the football team, with matches from local individuals and businesses, is pledging a dollar for every turnover the defense forces on the grid iron this fall.

The Student Senate's commitment to community service is further reinforced by the donation of $500 to the fraternity which turned out the most student participants for Community Service Day. This fall, the winning house was Phi Kappa Psi, which will donate the $500 to a local charity.
