Released in 1997, both films were exceptionally well-received by critics. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times. He called The Sweet Hereafter "a model of how to do adaptation (from novel to film) right" and Janet Maslin of the New York Times described Affliction as "quietly stunning."
In addition to the screenings, Banks will also read from his work on the evening of November 7 at 8 p.m. in Salter Hall in the Fine Arts Center.
