Brass and Woodwind Ensembles Spring Concert 2010

"The Full-Throated Power of the Music"—In performances featuring arrangements by senior Jason Allen and Director Peter Hulen, the College's Brass and Woodwind Ensembles presented their Spring Concerts, then combined for a final number—the first time in 15 years a Wabash Concert Band has taken the stage. "Six years ago, we had seven students in the ensemble," said Professor Peter Hulen, who directs both the Brass Ensemble and Concert Band. "Tonight, we have 21 in this group." "When the Concert Band performed the Copland piece at the end of the program, the full-throated power of the music shot through the audience," said Wabash President Pat White, in the audience with Wabash First Lady Chris White. "Peter Hulen and his colleagues in the music department are taking giant steps to enhance the role of music in the liberal arts at Wabash."

"It was a wonderful concert in every way and speaks to the many virtues of music and the arts at Wabash," said President White. "Men with many different majors, including biology major and flutist Jason Allen ’10 who arranged the Gershwin piece, created high quality performance that stretched their minds, hearts, and talents."

Proud Director: In her final concert as director of the Woodwind Ensemble, Professor Vanessa Rogers played cello with clarinetist Matt Routh ’10 and bassoonist Willem Drews ’13 on C.P.E. Bach's "Sonatas I and II."  "Vanessa Rogers has done a wonderful job with the Woodwind Ensemble," said President White. "She leaves Wabash with much on which we can build and with our gratitude."

Director Peter Hulen thanked Jim Sexton (center), Professor Bob Foote, and French horn player Anne Sexton for their years playing and keeping the ensemble strong. "I am thrilled and grateful that citizens such as Bob Foote and Jim and Anne Sexton have been the strong core of our Brass Ensemble since it's formation," said President White. "I am even more thrilled that we have moved from their being half of the ensemble to being an integral part of a much larger group."

Before the concert, Director Vanessa Rogers asked the Woodwind Ensemble to step outside so she could photograph them. When Wabash Professor of Chemistry Emeritus and award-winning photographer John Zimmerman noticed their exodus, he followed the group out and asked Professor Rogers to pose with her ensemble for a keepsake from this final concert of her extraordinary and too-brief time at Wabash.
