Phi Psis Assist Shelter During Animal Emergency

Fifteen Wabash Phi Psis were quick to lend a hand earlier this month when the local Animal Welfare League needed help after receiving more than 150 animals rescued from a Montgomery County residence. Here Boyd Haley ’17 comforts and feeds one of the 44 rescued dogs, most of them Shetland Sheepdogs. Herchel Springer holds up one of the rescued dogs for documentation. While some Phi Psis assisted the vets, others cleaned out cages and bathed, walked, and calmed the other dogs. Hezekiah Eibert and two freshmen worked with two dogs who had been in isolation and walked with and petted them for about an hour until they were calm.

Shane Xuan ’17 cradles one of the Shelties for documentation. Eibert says that the Phi Psi will be splitting much of their volunteer time between the shelter, Sugar Creek, and Habitat for Humanity.

According to the Crawfordsville Journal-Review, all 44 dogs were turned over to Shetland Sheepdog rescue groups in Indiana and Illinois. The birds were transported to the Frankfort Park Aviary and Petting Zoo in Frankfort, IN.

Chris Sparacio ’17 assists Dr. Keedy. 'These people do such hard work for these animals,' Eibert said. 'Lending a hand at a difficult time like this—for them, and for the animals—is the least we can do.'
