'Your quality of life is directly proportional to the number of choices you have,' T. Avery Walton told those packed into the Malcolm X Institute Monday night for the fourth John Evans Lecture.

Walton spent the day with Wabash students and came away impressed.

'Listen to those who have lived on the edge, who have tried and failed. You can’t learn much from people who stay safe in the middle. One of the best lessons I learned was from someone who tried to do something that didn’t work out, and consequently I was able to do the same thing and be successful.'

'I would suggest you try to find your passion so that your mind can stay at peace. There is nothing worse than spending your entire life doing something that you hate doing. It’s a miserable existence.'

Collier introduced his friend as 'a man committed to social justice and uplifting others.'

'Most people’s heroes are a composite—something from one person, something from another. So don’t be afraid to be something unique, a mixture of the best.'
