Description: | "Black in Paris": African Americans and Race in Modern France During the 1920s, African-American expatriates lived and worked in Paris. They rejected American society and embraced a new culture by contributing to French jazz, arts, and theater. This course examines The efforts of African-Americans, Senegalese warriors, immigrant women and Algerian nationals to find a home in France. Students will read and discuss works on African American pilots during WWI, WWI's colonial troops, "French Harlem," Black music, and Algerian and West African immigrants. In addition to course discussion, students will complete short paper assignments and a longer research paper on blackness, race, and ethnicity in modern France. |
