Fellowships For Seniors

Each year the endowment offers approximately 10-12 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors. They are selected from a pool of nominees from close to 400 participating colleges. Carnegie junior fellows work as research assistants to the endowment's senior associates. Current projects include: China Studies; Democracy and Rule of Law; Economics-Asia Program; Energy and Climate; Japan Studies; Middle East Studies; Nuclear Policy; Russian and Eurasian Studies; South Asian Studies; Southeast Asian Studies.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully-funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning.

The North American Language and Culture Assistants Program is an initiative of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain. The program is primarily devoted to providing US and Canadian students and graduates - majoring in any subject - who are native speakers of English or French with the opportunity to assist foreign language teachers in a variety of schools in Spain and to learn about
Spanish culture and society and also about its education system. Ambassadors assist teachers in the English or French programs in elementary, secondary or language schools 12-16 class periods a week.

This specialized DAAD program offers German Studies Research Grants to highly-qualified undergraduate and graduate students who are nominated by their department/program chairs. The grant may be used for short-term research (one to two months) in Germany. The program is designed to encourage research and promote the study of cultural, political, historical, economic and social aspects of modern and contemporary German affairs from an inter- and multidisciplinary perspective.

Highly qualified final year undergraduate students or those who have received an undergraduate degree of all disciplines may apply for the DAAD Study Scholarship for a full Master's degree program at a German university or for study at a German university as part of a postgraduate or Master's degree program completed in the home country. Study Scholarships are granted for one academic year with the possibility of a one-year extension for those wishing to complete a full degree program in Germany.

The English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Programs place Fulbrighters in classrooms abroad to provide assistance to the local English teachers. ETAs help teach English language while serving as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. The age and academic level of the students varies by country, ranging from kindergarten to university level. Applicants for ETA Programs can apply to only one country.

The study/research award category includes projects in both academic and arts fields. The study/research grants are available in approximately 140 countries. Applicants for these grants design their own projects and will typically work with advisors at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. Program requirements vary by country, so the applicant’s first step is to familiarize himself with the program summary for the host country. Creative and performing arts applicants are required to submit supplementary materials based on their disciplines.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are highly competitive, full-cost scholarships awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK. They are for the pursuit of a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.

Upon graduation, Orr Fellows launch careers at innovative Indianapolis-area companies, and through the Fellowship, they grow and learn alongside each other for two jam-packed years.

ALTs are engaged in language instruction and make up over 90% of all JET Program participants. They are mainly assigned to local boards of education or elementary, junior high or senior high schools and carry out their duties under the guidance of language teachers’ consultants or Japanese teachers of English (JTEs) as specified by the supervisor and/or principal of the board of education and/or school.

CIRs are engaged in internationalization activities and translation/interpretation, and are placed in administrative offices of local authorities or related organizations. This position requires a high-degree of fluency and positions are less than 10% of all JET Program participants. Their duties are carried out as specified by the supervisor at individual contracting organizations.

Established in 1974, the Luce Scholars Program is a nationally competitive fellowship that offers early-career leaders immersive, professional experiences in Asia. We aim to forge stronger relationships across geographic borders by creating opportunities for young Americans to deepen their ties and understanding of the countries, cultures, and people of Asia.

Open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents, the Luce Scholars Program provides stipends, language training, and individualized professional placement in Asia for 18 Luce Scholars each year. We welcome applications from college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals in a variety of fields, with a range of backgrounds and experiences, who have had limited exposure to Asia.

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at an UK institution in any field of study.

The Senator George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program is an initiative of the US-Ireland Alliance. The Scholarship is a nationally competitive post-graduate award for twelve Mitchell Scholars to pursue one year of study in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans program honors the contributions of immigrants and children of immigrants to the United States. Each year, we invest in the graduate education of 30 New Americans—immigrants and children of immigrants—who are poised to make significant contributions to US society, culture or their academic field. Each Fellow receives up to $90,000 in financial support over two years, and they join a lifelong community of New American Fellows.

The oldest and most celebrated international fellowship in the world, the Rhodes Scholarship offers 32 awards annually to US applicants. The fellowship competition is now also fully global by virtue of its additional national and regional constituencies and its two open Global Awards. Rhodes Scholars are chosen not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but for their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead. The scholarship offers recipients 2 years of academic study at the University of Oxford.

The Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF) is the American cohort of the Programme des Assistants de langue en France, a program of France Éducation international. The recruiting and promotion of this program is managed by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States. The program's goal is to strengthen foreign-language instruction in French schools by establishing a native speaker presence, while also providing young professionals from around the world with initial international teaching experience and first-hand knowledge of French language and culture.

Every year, we hire over 1,500 American English language teaching assistants.

Each year, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science, and Research (BMBWF) seeks recent college and university graduates interested in teaching English in Austria. Fulbright Austria (Austrian-American Educational Commission) has been responsible for recruiting US citizens for this outstanding program since 1962. More than 4,000 US teaching assistants (USTAs) have made a difference in hundreds of thousands of young Austrians’ lives over the decades.

The objective of the BMBWF's teaching assistantship program—which also brings native speakers from countries such as Russia, Spain, France, and Italy into Austrian secondary schools—is not only to expose young Austrians to native speakers, but also to arouse their interest in other cultures based on cross-cultural dialogue and personal contacts.

This initiative brings together young people who have demonstrated a talent for leadership and innovation. At Yenching, they are immersed in an intensive learning environment where they can explore China and its role in the world—past, present, and future. The Academy's goal is to shape new generations of global citizens with a nuanced understanding of China.

The Yenching Academy provides full fellowships to its scholars, and offers them a wide array of interdisciplinary courses on China within broadly defined fields of the humanities and social sciences. Working closely with their academic mentors, Yenching Scholars create their own study paths by choosing courses from six research areas. They participate in a variety of extracurricular activities and field studies, organized by the Yenching Academy, and designed by scholars themselves. Studying at the Academy is an exceptional opportunity to take part in intercultural exchanges and interdisciplinary learning, developing both personally and professionally.
