Adobe Reader 7 Bug Causes PDF Viewing Problem

A documented bug in Adobe Acrobat reader v7 may prevent PDF files on the web from displaying correctly when using Internet Explorer.  If you click on a PDF file and a new window flashes on the screen and then disappears, your computer has the problem.  Not all PDF files are affected, but many are.

Many computers in campus labs and classrooms have this issue.  We are working to install necessary patches as quickly as possible, but if you come across this problem here are two work-arounds:

1. Use the Firefox browser, which is not affected by this problem.  Firefox is loaded on all lab and classroom computers.

2. From Internet Explorer, right-click on the link to the PDF file, and select "Save Target As..." from the pop-up menu.  Save the PDF file to the desktop, then double-click the file on the desktop to open it.

Faculty and staff who received new computers this summer, or students with new computers may also see this problem.  To fix, do the following:

1. Click Start, then Programs, then Adobe.

2. Click "Adobe Reader 7.0".  Note: if you don't see Adobe Reader 7.0, you don't have this problem.

3. After Adobe Reader starts up, click Edit then Preferences.

4. From the "Categories" list, click Internet.

5. Under "Web Browser Options" on the top right, check the box next to "Display PDF in browser".

6. Click OK and then close Adobe Reader.  You will then be able to view PDF files from the web.
