SHG Microscope
A home-built laser-scanning microscope capable of second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy. This instrument enables selective imaging of crystalline modalities, a powerful diagnostic tool used by the Schmitt research lab for agrochemical development and testing.
Infrared Spectrometer
The Thermo Scientific Nicolet iS5 FT-IR Spectrometer provides high-quality spectra for teaching labs and the ATR accessory enables quick and versatile samples to be studied. From routine functional group identification to analysis of common polymer samples, undergraduates frequently use this tool in their laboratory experiments.
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer
Our 400 MHz NMR spectrometer from JEOL is operated by undergraduates in both teaching and research applications. Its sensitive multinuclear probe generates high-quality data in a wide variety of 1D and 2D NMR experiments with a user-friendly automation interface.
Temperature-controlled Fluorimeter
The Cary Eclipse Fluorescence Spectrometer is flexible and sensitive. With capacity for four cells and temperature control, it is well-suited for a variety of experiments, including kinetics studies with multiple samples.
Automated chromatography purification system
The Biotage Isolera One purification system is efficient, reliable, and commonly used in industry. Students use this system in the Wysocki research lab to purify organic products with real-time indication of elution using UV spectra.
Computer cluster
High performance computing cluster with ~450 processors operating over a dedicated high speed network.
FPLC (Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography) System
The Äkta Pure 25L Chromatography system is used for efficient protein purification using a variety of columns. Our configuration allows the connection of multiple sample loops and columns, and a flexible fraction collector that holds up to six 96-well plates.
Centrifuges
We have multiple centrifuges available, including the Beckman Allegra-X30R centrifuge which can spin down up to 1600 mL of liquid using the swinging bucket rotor, or spin at speeds up to 28,000g for clearing lysates of up to 6 thirty mL samples.
Plate reader
The Tecan Spark is a flexible 96-well pate reader capable of UV-Vis, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, and luminescence readings. Our unit has two injectors for complex experimental setups.
Flame Atomic Absorption
Flame atomic absorption is used to measure the content of metals in a variety of samples. This instrument has been used in undergraduate teaching labs to quantify copper and calcium in drinking water, as well as the calcium content of fortified and unfortified orange juice, among other uses.
UV-Vis
A flexible and powerful platform, the modular Ocean Optics UV-Vis system measures the wavelengths of ultraviolet and visible light absorbed by a sample. Used routinely in both teaching labs and research, the absorption spectrum of a compound gives information on its molecular structure and electronic properties, and can be used to quantify the presence of a large variety of organic and inorganic compounds.
HPLC-MS
A gold-standard instrument for compound detection, quantification, and identification, the HPLC-MS is used extensively in coursework and research. For example, this instrument has been used in undergraduate teaching labs to quantify analgesic drug content in commercial headache medication and key flavor and aroma compounds in wine. The HPLC-MS is also used actively in undergraduate independent research projects in several labs.
